INA starts exploration drilling of geothermal well Leščan GT-1

Zagreb, 28. ožujka 2025. – INA has initiated exploratory drilling of the Leščan GT-1 geothermal well near Đurđevac. This marks the continuation of INA’s exploration efforts within the Leščan geothermal water research area, following extensive geophysical surveys. The objective is to confirm the existence and characteristics of the geothermal reservoir and to conduct production tests to assess its energy potential.

If testing confirms sufficient potential for electricity generation from geothermal sources, INA will immediately proceed with drilling a second exploratory well within the same operational site. Based on the test results and geophysical data, INA will develop a detailed plan for the underground and surface infrastructure required for electricity production from geothermal resources.

Once the assessment of electricity generation potential is complete, INA will also evaluate the feasibility of distributing thermal energy to the local community and businesses in the Đurđevac area. The total investment for the first two wells is expected to be approximately €20 million, while the overall project value could exceed €170 million.

“Entering the geothermal energy sector is a logical step for INA, leveraging more than 70 years of expertise in oil and gas exploration and production. In addition to applying our existing knowledge in resource exploration, geothermal energy offers significant potential for sustainable electricity generation. However, this endeavour comes with challenges and risks—geothermal exploration is both costlier and technically more demanding than oil and gas exploration. It requires substantial investment and relies on government support. Therefore, like all investors in green energy projects, we need a predictable regulatory framework to justify investments and begin production as soon as possible,” emphasized Zsuzsanna Ortutay, President of INA’s Management Board.

Alongside representatives of regional and local authorities, as well as state and public institutions, Marijan Krpan, President of the Management Board of the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency (AZU), attended the ceremony and stated: „The Leščan project is a tangible example of how strategic energy goals gain a local dimension and real development potential. INA received its permit in October 2023 and obtained all necessary approvals for drilling commencement in the shortest possible timeframe. INA and the Croatia Hydrocarbon Agency are also successfully collaborating within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan project, „Preparation and Exploration of Geothermal Potential in the Context of District Heating“, where INA and Crosco provide services to the Agency and the Ministry in implementing this important initiative.

Geothermal energy enhances system stability while unlocking new economic opportunities, attracting investments, fostering knowledge development, and creating jobs. Moving forward, the project’s success will hinge on the coordination of all stakeholders—from the local community to the permit holder—to ensure that all activities align with the plans and contribute to the prosperity of the Đurđevac region.”

Drilling at the Leščan GT-1 well represents a critical phase of the exploration process, targeting a geothermal reservoir at depths between 3700 and 4200 meters. The estimated reservoir temperature is approximately 200°C, with expected geothermal water temperatures at the surface around 180°C.
